This story goes with the poster:
After recently visiting St. Bernard Parish, LA -- a community outside of New Orleans who experienced tremendous devastation from Hurricane Katrina, I was touched by the resilient residents I met there. One such man named Gilbert whose home we helped rebuild, offered us everything he had to thank us. The fruit from his beautiful "Satsuma" tree was one of his many offerings.
When I arrived back in Michigan I felt inspired to create a piece of art in honor of the people I had met. I used Gilbert's tree and put all 15 communities of the parish, somewhere in the rubble. I will never forget the inspiring resilient people of St. Bernard Parish, especially Gilbert and his "Satsuma" tree. |
