Artist’s Statement
I am a self taught photographer who uses traditional methods (film, and chemical darkroom) to achieve final ‘fine art’ prints.
my cameras include a nikon n90s, mamiya RB 67 and a pentax 67. my film of choice is normally kodak triX but i also love using infrared film to produce a different look, depending on the subject matter.
Lith Printing
Lith printing is a differnt type of printing. It uses B&W or color negatives, a suitable black & white paper and Lith developer . The paper used is heavily overexposed in the darkroom and then developed in the very dilute lith developer.
This is a very creative printing process and the results are unlike “normal” black and white printing in several ways. The prints produced using this technique can often be more ‘arty’ looking than conventional black & white prints.
Lith prints show an interesting range of color tones from a sepia look to purplish, pink, green etc., depending on the paper used, temperature and age of developer in the tray, toning etc. They can be very grainy and gritty in appearance. The process is very creative and personal and gives a lovely result.
Handcolored prints
Handcolored prints are created from original black and white or lith prints. After the original print is made in the darkroom it is colored by hand with marshal photo oil paints or pencils to achieve the results seen below.
